Child playing in car struck after disengaging handbrake

LATEST: A 5-year-old boy who was struck by a car at a property in the Sunshine Coast hinterland this morning is in a stable condition in hospital in Brisbane. 

The boy, who was run over by the family car about 9.45am, received injuries to his head and pelvis at a property on Old Gympie Rd, Mooloolah Valley, about 30km south west of Maroochydore. 

It is believed the boy was playing in the car and disengaged the hand brake.

The car rolled backwards over a retaining wall.

No one saw the incident unfold, but it is understood the boy was able to throw himself out of the car's open door, but was struck by the vehicle. 

The boy's mother and father gave him first aid until paramedics arrived on the scene. 

A spokeswoman for Queensland Ambulance Services said the boy was conscious and breathing when paramedics arrived but had received multiple injuries to the head and pelvis, and a abrasions to the left side of his face.

The Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight rescue Helicopter was tasked to the property just before 10am. 

The boy was stable when he was airlifted to the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.


UPDATE: A boy who was struck by a car at Mooloolah Valley, about 30km south west of Maroochydore, has possibly suffered a head injury. 

The boy has been loaded into the RACQ LifeFlight helicopter in a stable condition for transport to the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane.

A spokeswoman for Queensland Ambulance Service said early reports suggested the boy, aged under 10 years, had a possible head injury, and paramedics confirmed there were abrasions to the left side of the boy's face. 

The boy was conscious and breathing when paramedics arrived at the Old Gympie Rd address.

EARLIER: A child has been struck by a car at Mooloolah Valley, about 30km south west of Maroochydore.

Emergency services were called to Old Gympie Rd about 9.45am to reports of an incident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Paramedics are preparing to airlift the boy, aged under 10 years, to hospital.

A spokeswoman for Queensland Ambulance Service said the boy was conscious and breathing.
